I haven't heard anybody saying they have seen them yet.

Keep your fingers crossed, it would be nice to see a good run this year.

The sport fishing season for smelt is from
March 1 through April 30 (check local seasonal
regulations for smelt fishing from Chicago
Park District properties). A sport fishing
license entitles the angler to take smelt.
Waters of Lake Michigan comprise Illinois
smelt fishery. Smelt may be taken with a
seine or gill net not more than 12 feet long, 6
feet deep and with mesh size not more than 1
inches diagonal stretch, or by dip net not
more than 12 feet in diameter with mesh size
not less than 1 inch diagonal stretch. Trolley
or power lines may also be used by sport fishermen
in taking smelt (see Trot and Trolley
Line section). No person shall operate more
than one smelt net device at any one time.
All fish taken other than smelt must be
released immediately.

The calender works out nice this year for the Chicago Park District. 5 weekends. April 1&2, 8&9, 15&16, 22&23, 29&30. I plan on smelting opening weekend, in case its an early season. Anyone else planning on getting out there??

Last few years the Lake levels have been down, and the runs have not been very good. With the levels coming up some this year, maybe catches will return to what they were like in the old days. :hmmmm

Always a good time down at the Planetarium, fish or no fish.

Jay theres ice at montrose??? Ice or no ice I will be there, The anchor will go farther if it slides on the ice. It should triple my throw distance. PS two years ago The smelt were in, last year I think they ran early, it all depends if they are in during the 30 day window, which the park district give.

Everywhere else along Illinois' portion of Lake Michigan's shoreline.

Hey Otter, Welcome to the Site!!!!
Smelt nets can be bought at Henrys Sports an 31st and Canal in Chicago, they have a good supply and decent prices, they will also have all the pertinent info that you need.

Get your nets from Freddie; He sells Filipino nets at Montrose harbor; The filipino (monofilament) nets are a must now that the lake water is so clear. Freddie's numbers are 708 636-3721 - home
708-687-7200 ext. 4261-work
708-567-4198 - cell

Splicer, we are talking about nets from shore, they are lowered on a Pulley system.
Feel free to come out, I am sure there will at least be a few get togethers for this down at the Lake.

I have stayed later in past years it all depends if the security guards go home early, if the cops are busy in the city etc. I can't wait!
