Took the day off and checked out a couple creeks with a buddy from work. Now, I don't know all the spots (yet), but the spots we hit were absolutley devoid of big fish. Did run into some par and some creek chubs. As a matter of fact, my confidence with the creek chubs is running pretty high

Russ

Little booger, when he first took the float under, I imagined him about 30-inches bigger and chrome silver...

Hey wsj, a "par" is a pre-smolt steelhead. Below is a pictorial of the life of a steelhead:

Steelhead "fry" - wild one (I am proud to say).
Image

This guy is a wild "par," it still has it's "par markings."
Image

Beginning the "smoltification" process, losing it's par markings (spots and that rainbow stripe). Will soon be running to LM.
Image

Smolt: par markings gone and is or just has imprinted on it's natal or stocked stream. The creek where these guys were caught has a fair amount of natural reproduction and does not get stocked (although, it is conceivable that a St. Joe smolt could get here). I don't think that is likely, because when the DNR stocks them in the St. Joe, they are almost ready to make their summer's night trip to the big pond.
Image

Fresh steelie (Bright Chrome) just in from the lake - caught this gal, this time last year (caught some just like it today, haven't downloaded the pics yet).
Image

They winter over in the St. Joe and begin to get darker
Image

Yet darker and getting that crimson stripe we love so much (and a bonus - a double stripe buck).
Image

And darker yet and they will spawn in Spring
Image

The filet table is the next stop
Image

Next stop in the run is the BBQ, then the dinner table. I love this time of year

Hope that helps.
