Sorry for the late report, it has been a week of catch up after a few days off. With the whacked amount of hours I have been working for the last 8 months, and the boys playing on two football teams with 6 practices a week and two games each week, it was time for a break. Took the boys to the creek on Columbus Day to do a little steelhead hunting. Creek was low, slow and crystal clear. Lowest I have seen it in 15 years at least. All species of fish were in the creek, coho and kings swimming about and fighting for spawning rights, while the steelies stayed tucked in their normal holes and lay downs. We really had no interest in going for the coho and kings. Most were really dark, and many of the kings were in their death throes.

Bait of choice was a black woolly bugger tipped with a cricket or grasshopper. Difficult part about this trip is that the flow is so slow, an accurate drift is difficult. Putting a small float on was not stealthy enough for the clear water conditions. You had to just hit your fly in the absolute perfect spot to get the fly to pass close enough to the fish to cause a strike, before actually spooking it. It was more stalking than fishing. Sneaking up from behind the holes, slowly and quietly, and then try to present the fly with little splash in the water and no casting of shadows. Needless to say, the boys have it down.

Best part about this fish was when it was safely in the net, I asked AJ to hold out his hand. It was shaking like a leaf. I put my hand on his chest and it was thumping like a rabbit. Can't beat that steelhead rush. I had the same feeling and I only held the camera for the day.

Took quite a few mental notes of all the under cuts in the bank that are now visible with the water being so low. When the water is back up, I now know some prime spots that will for sure be holding fish. Funny thing is, high water or low water, these fish tend to stay at the same spots, year after year after year. Was nice to see the boys walk up to a spot that they actually remembered hooking a fish at, drifting it, and hooking up again. Those holes that are now 4 to 5 feet deep are at a premium, but that are stacked with fish.

First fish as a teenager. Hard to believe how fast they have grown.

You can tell by the look an Tommy's face below, he had a good time.

I had a better one. :D

Not sure how many we had on, but it was enough to make the day go by in a flash. Kept three for dinner, because the size the boys are now, they can pretty much eat two fillets on their own.

Saw many other people fishing spinners, shrimp, and crawlers but didn't see any other hook ups. I do believe the cricket is the ticket. Has worked for me year after year in October for the steelies, without fail.

Great hook up shots.

With that kind of "stealth" involved what kind of line and or leader did you have spooled. I take it you where 100 percent with out floats.

No floats. 8 lb Mean Green mono line. The whole trick to the light line is setting a light drag on a long soft tip rod with some strength at the butt. Kevin, Bear from the site, custom made two rods for the boys for their birthday a few years ago. Those rods are the cats pituty.

Sure, cause they already have keys to the boat I'm sure.

Looks like a great time Tom.
