Where i have been fishing i notice there have been a ton of small gills. I cant seem to catch them and they have been stealing my bait. I was just wondering what the smallest jig size is that i can go to or what you guys use. Any info is appreciated

I would start at 1/64 ounce and work my way down smaller from there. Use a single spike. Have fun check custom jigs and spins web site. Lots of options and plastics can be deadly also try bros (sp) blood worms the action is incredbile. Stick with 1 and 2lb test for line.

Look at wolfram fiskas jigs. They are a bit pricey but hold up pretty well. Size 3 wolfram jig in gold with a glow bead and use a plastic wedge or spike. I like plastique! Whatever works for you. Downsizing your jig will enable you to land the small gills as well as the big ones. Just as Fin said makes sure you match your line (1-2lb test) to the smaller jig.

They may not be Fiska's but they are very effectivve just the same and cheaper.
I personally love the Tungsten jigs for their small profile/heavy weight ratio and have caught all my personal best panfish on them.

You can pick them up at Gander Mountain. If you wanna buy some online do a google of Wolfram Ice Fishing jigs. There are a handful of suppliers out there.

Not sure what size jiggs I use but man-o-man they get the job done from an eight inch crappie down to a bait size bluegill. I always put on one waxy.

fish wrangler, Not trying to start anything with you, but if you're gonna make a comment on a thread asking what size jig to use and you don't know the size you use, maybe you could include a picture with a coin in the picture to compare it to. I'm just saying that would make your post a little more relative and useful.

A buddy turned me onto Size 14 diamond jigs this year and they have worked wonders. All I seem to catch are small gills.
Seriously they also catch bigger ones as well. Slap a waxie on them bad boys. The problem i have is getting them down fast enough. Bass pro has them but kinda expensive there. I have found them at a Water Werks for about half as much. If you are getting hits but not hooking up are you sure it's the lure? I've also discovered that spring bobbers are a must have for the little guys. Good luck finding them this time of year though. I had to resort to making my own. Check with Special Ed he's been making a few interesting ones. But...

did any body say micro? triangle @ at 83 and grass lake rd still has everything in stock you'll need to down size
and catch fish. some of the jigs there are pricsey ?(tungeston) but they still have a great selection left and they
give a great count on minnows and roaches. the staff is real helpfull and ive seen them take time to rig rods for customers and explain how to fish certain baits and target species. i dont know if your fishing lake county or not but they have put me on the "Hot" bite more than once.(info they given me have been topos, where to park, and quys names that are running those places) the owner there has even gone on the internet to sites that show newbees how to fish. but dont forget to down size your line also to 1 to2 # thread with the smaller jigs.

Well thanx for the suggestions guys but with ice out just around the corner, I wont have to worry about down sizing. Those feeder bluegill grow some giants!
