Anyone know of any good spots in IL, or maybe just a general area?
I've never hunted for arrowheads but I've always wanted to. I remember finding one as a kid and how exciting it was. I've heard corn fields are a good place to look after they've been plowed or rained on. Although, I know I can't just walk on someones else's land without permission or without possibly getting shot at.
I've looked online at possible spots were Indian camps once were but not too many specific answers as to where to look.
Any info would help out greatly since I am new to this. Happy New year!

We used to find them just north of Ladd,Il. in a corn field that has a small creek running through it.It seems to me that you usually find more near a water source such as a creek,river,or lake.I know it is easier to find them after farmers plow and then a good rain on top of that to expose them.The problem with finding them in fields is that you find alot of pieces due to plowing breaking them.

I got lucky,My daughter and I found a Beautiful arrowhead while taking out the sod the grubs ate a couple of years ago.Out here in Yorkville,I learned that the area my home was built on was a area the indians used to hunt.
You need to do more homework than on this website-Check with historical sites,even by your house,these people are a great wealth of info to find out where the indians hunted,be polite, offer to help them,with what your looking for I bet someone will let you go on there property and you can enjoy a great hunt for arrowheads.

Many, many moons ago, my cousins lived on a 10 acre piece of property that was very long and thin, in the back of the property was a hill, a round hill just stuck up, my oldest cousin started plowing that back portion of the property, including the hill/mound. Over the years he collected an amazing bunch of arrow heads and spear heads. He took them and made wooden boxes with felt backing and made display cases of his finds. I would have to say that his collection over the years was in the hundreds, with some real nice finds. Looking back I would venture a guess that the mound may have been a significant spot, may have even been a burial mound, not sure, but could have been.

Some info on your quest. I am not sure how much of this you all ready know
about. Illinois occupied several Indian tribes and our state was named after the
Illini tribe.

I am sure your search will concentrate in the NW part of our state and all over
the rest of our land to the south.

Lowden State Park , Ogle County: Native Americans inhabited the region prior to European settlement and they kept the trees burnt off the stone bluffs to keep their roots from splitting the rock. When the earliest European settlers arrived they found groves of trees in the hollows, ravines, and lowlands near the river, which was where they built their first homes.

The Winnebago/Ho-Chunk occupied the area around Green Bay in Wisconsin, reaching beyond Lake Winnebago to the Wisconsin River and to the Rock River in Illinois.

Dajord thanks a lot for those links! I will check them out and do some research of my own. Hopefully in the spring I'll be able to get out there and start looking, and if nothing else I'll enjoy being outdoors

You can find them along any creek or high ground. I find a lot of them here in Cook County. The best time to look is after a rain, because the flint will shine when wet.
