Thanks for the reminder goosehunter. I snuck in an app when I saw your post and got lucky with opening day at des Plaines. Will be my first time trying. Hope it is as fun as it looks.

I should thank you as well, I also snuck in an application after your post. My dad and I will be hunting Silver Springs on the 3rd. It will be our first dove hunt too. We were lucky enough to enjoy some Bacon-wrapped Dove breast Jalepeno Poppers after a duck hunt last season, and we've been ithcing to get our hands on some of those little birds ever since.

How many boxes of shells should I plan on bringing? Someone told me the IL State average was 7 shells per Dove last year.

Pannie Popper; It all depends on what you can afford most DNR Dove site's require non toxic shot and that cost a lot of $$$$. I drive a little further out and as of last season I could still use lead shot. I use reloads (trap loads) and bring a case with me but only carry about 2/3 boxes in the field and have never had to go back to the car for more!

3 of the 5 guys in my group got opening day at Des Plains. I'm already thinking about what gun to shoot, 20 or 12. Hopefully this year will be as good as the last few but with some of these storms and rain I'm hoping it didn't mess the fields up. I will probably go out a day or two before to see what the fields look like and if there are any birds.

macrackus; if you never been there you might want to take a ride to check it out before opening day and look at the fields. So you know where you are going. This is the "odd year" so we will be hunting the "B" fields, and it seems I always do better in the "A" fields. Good Luck and leave a few for me. GH

I didn't even put any other choices because I figured I'd get opening day. :cuss

What is the big advantage to drawing opening day? Is it just that the birds haven't been shot at yet for the season? Also, do you guys use decoys or anything like that when you hunt the public areas? Like stated before, this is my first season gunning for the little birds and I'd like to act like a good Boy Scout ... you know, "Be prepared." I'm trying to decide if I should shoot the new 20ga o/u or the trusty 12ga 870.

In my opinion on opening day the birds fly a little lower and fly into the field easier. Plus there is 1,000 more birds because they have not been killed.
