A bit of nostalgia, it shows the on going struggles still going on in Lake Michigan. Still it offers some hope.

SIGN ME UP! It reminds me of my childhood for sure. Dad bringing the chubs home was a fun experience. My friends family owned Kogut's Fisheries in the city. Good times! :thanks

:gpost Lots of positive signs happening on the lake, could it be we're reaching an equilibrium with the quaggas
and zebras and all the reports of eminent doom will now be replaced with reborn fisheries in a cleaner
healthier environment........ Who would have thought ? Whats next, smelt? :thanks Perch Chaser for the good
news!

Great article. Thanks for sharing. Smoked Chubs from Charlie's Smokehouse in Gills Rock were always one of the highlights of our annual Door County trip. It was a sad day when they weren't there anymore...A Smelt fry sounds wonderful too! Let's hope the Chubs are the start of more good to come. :gpost

A little history on the smelt...In 1912 several groups tried to stock salmon into lake michigan along the lower michigan shores.Their attempts kept failing and it was determined that the lack of food was the reason so around 1915/16 they started planting smelt to try and get a food source for the salmon. The salmon that they kept planting failed to return but by the late 1920s and early 1930s the smelt that they had planted had spread over the entire lake by the millions. Maybe its time to try a restocking program on smelt to help the salmon fishery as well as the shore fisherman

What is the name of the steak house? Been up there for 35 years, and don't recall smelt on a buffet anywhere. More than happy to hit them up.

For someplace close, try here....

Chubs and smelt are readily there. The spot the old Blues Brothers jumped the bridge. This place to me is second only to buying them at Rocky's at Navy Pier, back when there were peach trees on the Dime Pier. Perch fish the rocks and pilings, grab a peach off a tree, while fishing from a wood 1962 Thompson. Now that is a memory. 8)~

Buddylee,

I'm pretty sure that picture you added is of Rocky, isn't it? He would sit there and look at the Dime Pier all day and night.
