A good friend and I took his little jon boat on semi hard water last weekend in search of bluegills....the end result was not so good. After breaking thru a few hundred yards of 1.5" thick ice, we managed to get to thinner ice on the main lake that was about a half inch thick..unfortunately there was no actual open water. So we drove the boat in a big circle, severed the large sheet into 3 pieces, and shoved the sheets under the ice using the transom and trolling motor to clear an area to fish........sound crazy?.....it was. We caught a few nice gills and a half dozen small crappies.

We did the same thing last year on Dec 6th....but with better results.
