I will be stationed at NHGL for a one-year dental residency starting next summer, can anyone suggest areas to fish in that area? I will most likely be fishing from shore and typically target bass (small mouth and large mouth), but I enjoy catfishing and panfishing as well. Also, if that area is good for salmon and/or trout, I would like to give that a shot as well.

I'm interested in fishing Lake Michigan, retention ponds, rivers/streams, etc.

Thank you,

Joe

Doc, thank you for your service. I would bet some of our Chitowners would hook you up with a trip on the big pond for Salmon.

There's a few of us that have served that fish around there. Can't help you much with the Bass as I don't target those things but as far as Salmons and Perches... Well, lets just say I can find a few here and there... Of course Perchin' is closed during July, but there could be a silver fish or two to be had.

For Bass in that area, I'd definately recommend Deep Lake. You have to rent a boat from a resort there though for 15$ but if you have your own trolling motor or go with someone who does, that lake has some of the best Largemouth fishing in the county for sure.

Hey Doc,
During the the spring and the fall you can put a line in at the base marina for some salmon/trout action. I have never caught anything from the pier but have seen fish caught by others. If you don't have a boat, there are a number of people that is asked would be more then happy to take you out for some snacks or gas money to track down some big fish. If you want bass or pan fish I would suggest the Chain of Lakes, Fox lake being one of them. I have never fished there, but know a few people around the base that go that way on the weekends. Alot of good info and people on this site, I have learned alot over the last 2 years. I am stationed on RTC if you have any questions about the base feel free to shoot me a PM.

Joe,
As a guest of ours in the area, I am sure we can take out a fellow outdoorsman
for a trip of two.

Stay tuned on this site for guys going out and don't be afraid to ask and try
to hook up. Who knows, as many of us get older, a fine dentist might
be willing to help out a old guy with some dental work. We need our teeth to
enjoy our fish fry.
