I was out at 10AM below the South Elgin dam walking the bank throwing a silver spinnerbait. Had a nice 18" walleye slam it. That was a first. Have you guys noticed how many river shiners there are this year? It's probably a good & bad thing.

Never caught one on a spinner bait yet. Did catch a Walleye on a rubber worm fishing for bass out at Lasalle lake. Everyone was working the points for Walleye and I'm catching them off the rip-rap.

They are fine walleye baits given the right tippings  Use them quite a bit.

Noticed that myself. Seems to be millions. Good thing cause the fish will george themselves and and grow to be big fatties and probably a bad thing because they wont want to bite anything else.

I think it's funny that when you are using a spinnerbait, you are fishing for bass, but if you troll for walleye, you use a spinner harness. Doesn't surprise me at all.

I caught a 22" walleye on a White rooster tail last week on the fox. He slammed it hard too.

Here is a tip: While fishing the fox, a couple of locals came by and fished by us. They brought their own bait. River Shiners caught in the river. We got more hits and caught more fish using the river shiners than we were getting with the store bought bait. The locals claim that they smell differently. I am not sure if thats true or not, but I am going to catch my own bait next time. One more thing, these uys were putting two to four shiners on the hook at the same time, and it was working great!

Good Luck

River shiners are excellent bait on the all the rivers, ie mississippi, fox and illinois. They really are the predominant forage. So, if you get a chance, they are great.
