By buddy and I are going to do a small trip down the lower fox, starting in maybe Yorkville and going south, in the canoe. This is my first time on the Fox in this weather. Can any one give me a good drop off/pick up location that will not be to over whelming long but still a good run.

We are testing how we can handle the cold... I don't want to be 4-5-6 hours on the canoe and then realize that we are freezing... if you want to PM me that is fine.

You could launch in Yorkville in town or at Silver Springs S.P. and float down to the canoe launch in Millbrook by the 2 bridges.

Just watch out for the old millrace about a mile upstream from Millbrook. Google earth it and you should be able to guage the distance of the trip. Good luck ,be safe and have fun.

I second it, trip from S.springs to millbrook. About 2.5-3 hours depending how you fish it. However, I dont know if I would recommend it this time of year. If I remember correctly a lot of duck blinds along that stretch & I don't know how/when hunting is. The millrace he is talking about is simple - stay left. If your worried about length of a trip & freezing, hit the ponds @ silver springs or elsewhere.

My buddy floats that area for ducks with out a blind, he sits in the front while and some one else floats a line and calls in the back. He given us some advice as well.

It is active duck season now...

You can only drift shoot from Fox River Road down stream.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=yorkville ... 1&ct=image

You cannot do that upstream of Fox River Road. There are designated blind sites upstream from there all the way to Orchard Road.

http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hu ... fs/fxr.htm

Also, and let someone correct me if wrong, if your canoe is camo, you have to anchor it before shooting. If not, then you don't have to.

Watch for houses along the shore, there is a limit to how close you can be.

Stay real tight to shore or the shore of any islands. They won't see you coming if they're in the slack water on the downstream side of an island.

From Fox River Road to Shue Shue Gah canoe launch, the two bridge area, won't take you more than an hour. And that's if you're taking your time. It will be on the right.

I'd find an indent in the shore, stay in the canoe, and wait a few out too. Otherwise it's going to be a short ride.

Ken G,

Thanks for the information. I have had come across these links and YES I beleive you are correct.

The Canoe they use is not camo, my isn't either.
Here is some other information I found reguarding the IL River.

http://www.lib.niu.edu/2002/oi021116.html

There is NO HUNTING allowed in the St Charles. I found an article on that. Apparently pellets were found in back yards. So I can't blame the restrictions.

There is a lot of mix match information out there.. especially when you get very spefic.

1 hour float seems short I considered Shue Shue Gah to Lois Landing....

Great link, thanks. That clears up a lot and that's not how it's written in the IDNR hunting digest.

I've known about drift shooting the stretch I mentioned for a number of years. I've never got around to it.

I used to have a hunting kayak and never got to use it for that. Old Town Predator 111. they Also make a 14 footer so you can bring your dog.

Extremely stable for general use. Some day I'll have another one.
