The water temperature was 62º this morning. The water is still on its way down. The flow rate is 1,330 cubic feet per second in Montgomery. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/il/nwis/uv?05551540

The hot artificial bait is the #5 Rattle Trap in the Blue Shad Color according to reports. Of course, live bait is always an excellent choice. Extra Large Fatheads and Medium Roaches are the baits of choice for Small Mouth in the river. Make sure you’re paying attention, because the reports have been saying the fish are biting very lightly.

We hope everyone has a Safe and Happy Memorial Day!

Good Luck Out There!

Thats right Karen, The smallmouth are biting but very light.Things will pick up a bit more as the water warms and they rest after the spawn. I've been catching some big channel cats a couple over 5lbs while wading. They are nice and fat and on the inside current seam. The water still is a bit chilly if your in it for a while but its worth it when your catching quality fish. Thanks for your reports on the river Batavia BAIT... The best little bait shop on the Fox with great live Bait and Up to Date Fishing Info!!!

Thanks for the report. The channel cats are really pretty this time of the year. They also seem more aggressive.

Been out catching lots of big smallies on Green Pumpkin tubes lately. Footballs! Biggest at 19", 19.5", and I lost one that looked bigger. Lots of 17-18"s too. They are where the minnows are.

One thing I'm happy about is all of the signs the Illinois-Smallmouth-Alliance (great organization with some great people) put up letting people know the size limits and when and when they can not keep Smallies. Thanks guys!
