Jmdog got me stirred up with his expeditions to the river. So, not wanting to don the waders, I took the ultralight to Naperville's riverwalk and spent from 3:30 to 5pm throwing a #4 hook with a Yum crawler. It initially did not bode well when my first (first!) cast found a log and the hook had to set into it. After some re-rigging, I started to take smallmouth with a slight jerking action as the bait flowed downstream. But like they were made out of the same mold, they were all in that 9" class. They were hitting and I had a bite with almost every cast but they were on the small side. In the end, I landed about 15-18 and then gave up to let them grow. A nice evening and a good way to keep me from getting stale.

Nice way to spend an afternoon, even the small ones keep your hook setting skills sharp.

There's nothing better than brown bass in the fall. Sounds like time well spent.
