I figured I would create my first picture story, as I have seen/read a few nice ones on the site.

It all started with the decision that I would rather shoot some ducks than come up with a Halloween costume and spend too much money on a night of drinking. It was settled, off to see a high school friend that lives up in LaCrosse and had some good reports of early season action.

So, I loaded up the car and off I went. Can you sense my excitement?

A few tools of the trade...

The fields were all taken out and I passed about 4 blood spatters from deer on my way up.

As the terrain began to change, I knew I was getting close and into some beautiful country.

And then I was there....

Got in around 1:30, and it was time to head out. Why waste anytime?

We got to our spot and setup the spread. Birds were moving early!
We got our first crack at some little zipper ducks, but they are tough to track! Missed all of them. But we got some canvasbacks to work and I knocked down my first ever Can. What a pretty bird! Went out to retrieve it, and he starts to dive. Great. He pops up about 40 yds away and I start to sprint, or best I can in knee high water and waders. SPLASH! :shock Down I went.... tripped over a submerged stump and now I've filled my waders and got a shock of cold. Luckily it was fairly warm out and I recovered to kill the duck and retrieve it.

Had to strip down and line dry my clothes. It wouldn't be duck hunting without some kind of mishap, right?

Well, here he is. Never knew they had red eyes.... nothing like a zombie duck on Halloween weekend!

The next morning we setup a bigger spread and was hoping for some mallards and teal, so we threw out 62 dekes and hoped for the best. Well, we got more of the same...... DIVERS. Including my first ever Goldeneye! oh, and one greenhead. But at least I stayed dry that day.

All in all, it was a great trip ad can't wait to get back in 3 weeks, when hopefully I can add some more species to my repertoire!!

It was an inheritance from my grandfather, as is a lot of my waterfowl equipment. It's a Beretta 303a.
