Place: My Concrete Driveway.
Depth of ice: Less than 1/32 of an inch
Conditions: Dusted with light snow.
Bite and presentation : Nonexistant.
Results: One old fart splayed out on the ground hollering at the top of his lungs.
His ribs are bruised on the right side.

Yikes John! Even though that can be pretty painful, it is good to hear that is was only bruised ribs.

You had some major surgery done last year(Dec/2009.....ish), so guess could be worse.

Wish ya a speedy recovery!

You will be on the ice in no time! Its crazy, the fog settled on the ground where I am at around 9 last night. I take one step on the driveway this a.m., damn near bit it hard twice taking the garbage out. Threw some salt down, dried up nice, walked out a couple minutes ago and its ice again! Be careful and take it easy, have a good holiday, the ice is here to stay. At least til WOW.

years ago, I was with friends and we weren't ice fishing but rather taking depth measurements and compiling a bottom map of a quarry (long before internet topo maps!). We had just sounded nearly 60 FOW and were moving to the next spot with the auger, over a hundred yards from shore, when my boot broke through a thin shell of ice into liquid water. Bladder check!

Turns out it was a layer of water on top of the ice, with a shell on top. Kind of a liquid bubble in the ice I guess. After nearly soiling myself with the thought of a cold wet death, we found 18" of ice. We treaded very carefully the rest of the day! We did meet an ice fisherman that had taken, of all things, a 12 lb channel cat through the ice.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's never too early to start talking about. Mark my words. This is going to be a phenomenal ice season!

I agree with Val. A rundown of ice/safety conditions is a very good thing to put in your posts. :cold :fishice

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fishice :drink

I agree with dynapollo, 2 seasons ago was my worst season ever, last season was pretty good, the last time that pattern happened was 6 years ago, first a terrible season was after a la nina year (similar to 2 summers back....... really really wet spring and a drought for the rest of the summer. then a good one then a great one, that great one followed a el nino weather pattern similar to this year with unusually cool weather starting the summer then horribly hot then wet......is this sounding familiar? well see how it plays out.

Come on water, freeze freeze freeze freeze freeze. How much longer is this going to take??? Call me crazy for saying this but what kind of impact is this going to have on the 2012 open water season and the 2012-2013 ice season?
