Shabbona Lake Rockfest 2014

The tradition of adding more strategically placed rock habitat will continue on Saturday February 1, 2014 . Rockfest is organized by the Shabbona Lake Sportsman Club with help from many other area fishing clubs. During the past 13 years over 1000 tons of rock have made a great impact on the fishery. This year there are 3 areas we had approved by the Biologist. First we will create a new pile in the Southwest bay on top of an old gravel road, then we will add more rock to the piles created the past few years on the west shoreline. Finally if conditions and enough help is envolved more rock will be pulled by ATV to enlarge a rockpile on the east side. Normally this event is finished around noon and a nice cookout is provided for all. That leaves time to do some ice fishing.
We encourage the many fishing clubs that fish Shabbona to bring a group out and lend a hand . Nothing is better than seeing what the Rockpiles look like and you know exactly where they are. The Rock is placed thru large holes cut in the ice so there is no movement on floating ice. Bring your GPS to mark the spots .
We also are in need of people with atv's . Large rock is loaded by tractor onto plywood sleds that are pulled by the atvs over the holes where they dump themselves. The more atvs the faster the event will go. Atvs are allowed for this event only.

Sportsmen will meet at 8 30am , in the parking lot near Lakeside Bait n Tackle. Also check Shabbona lake.com for any last minute changes. I would appreciate anyone that has an ATV , or group of people coming out to contact me so we can better plan for the event. Please Contact Rich McElligott at mclgot1@aol.com or if you want to call him send this poster a P.M. & I will give you his phone ##. you can also let them know at the bait shop as they will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays Help keep Shabbona the great fishery it is. Thank You Remember there are two night ice fishing events planned January 18th & February 22nd. :thanks

Yes and even snowmobiles & atv's are not allowed -except the park waves the rule for 4 wheelers involved in the rock drop for the day of the rock drop. yes we are still hoping to get some help. A few weekends ago I counted 24+ shanties on the ice, maybe some of those folks may be willing to help build more habit.

Ice should be thick enough for a pick-up truck or a small dump truck, why not get permission for them?
