I've spent a lot of time down there especially in Hardin County and I've never heard of a backpack permit for the SNF. I've heard of One Horse Gap but never about the fishing. It sounds pretty good based on the Sportsman Connection description.
Actually, I was just talking to my Uncle yesterday and he always raves about Jones Lake which is down in that area and is comparable to One Horse. He is a crappie fishermen and does very well fishing afternoons after Turkey Hunting. When down there definitely check out the Garden of the Gods, Karbers Ridge, and Cave in Rock State park along the Ohio. There is some real beautiful country down there. I'll be down right after Easter.

coool, another BPer.
Have you been to Porcupine Mountains state park in the UP? Right on Lake Superior and they have a couple of interior lakes that you can camp on. One has several cabins with row boats. Reserve in plenty of time. Its only a 2-3 mile BP trip to the cabin, but its a great lake and only 1/2 mile downhill to the other lake.
I want a full update on your DP trio through Shanee, Im going to take the Boy Scouts on a week long trip there next year.

Been in Shawnee a few times. Great area, been to some awesome places off the beaten trail. I have no idea where i was, or how to get anywhere except the main places. I did see it with a little different perspective as I have a friend who lives about 1/2 way between Cave in Rock and Elizabethtown. He was my, so to speak ,guide on our all day jaunts in the woods. He knows the place like the back of his hand...well the eastern side. A couple places of interest were Panther Hollow, might be just a local name for the place or even his name for it. He also took me to this boulder over looking the Ohio river with names and dates carved in it from the 1700's. He has been behind the "fake' wall at the back of Cave in Rock and knows all the history of the cave and local area. We snuck in the Old Slave house in the '70's before it was a public attraction. He knew all the info, later I took my son there and we took the tour. The curator told me the exact same things my buddy did years ago. He has been visiting down there since the late 50's and living there since the mid 70's. His family originally came from there...and his relatives are everywhere! when you are down there and see the handcrafted willow chairs and furniture...those are his creation and his sole income. So buy a chair that "Moon" made!!!! And if you are lucky enough to run into him...he will share some great places to go with directions!
