Have been steadily catching crappies for the last couple of weeks in a local forest preserve lake.

Here is a pic of a respectable 9" keeper, and next to it is a 14" pig. Only got one of these monsters, but what a fight! This is the biggest crappie I ever caught. From the mouth it almost looks like a smallie.

The big boy came on a large fathead--no, not me, silly--a minnow. But the crappie have also hit on jigging spoons, small casting spoons, and twister/jigs--all drifted or slow trolled. The shore guys haven't been getting them, nor have the boaters who don't work the drift.

Also caught 3 small walleye on one of these trips (all 12" and under, on minnows, of course). Its good to see growing walleye in a forest preserve lake. It has been many years since I've caught a walleye there.

Three guesses as to what's for dinner tonight???

You could probably fish the rest of your life in the FP and never get another 14" crappie. That there was a mounter, not a eater. How hungry were you. The mississippi back waters are full of nice slab crappie at first ice.
