Fish kill at LaSalle Lake
August 13, 2010 at 01:22 PM

MARSEILLES, Ill. (AP) - Experts with Exelon Nuclear electric utility say the hot weather has killed more than 2,000 fish in LaSalle Lake near Marseilles (mar-SAYLZ’) in north-central Illinois.

Officials say most of the dead fish are gizzard shad. They say the water temperature was 98 degrees when Exelon workers found the dead fish. Exelon officials say the Illinois
Department of Natural Resources is to conduct a separate independent lake survey.

Both workers at the LaSalle station and state natural resources workers will clean the lake. Experts with Exelon say extreme weather conditions historically have led to fish kills.
