bowfins, aka dogfish or mudfish are in every river system out here... you will find them in the same spots as bass... weed patches and submerged timber... they will bite ANYTHING... i have caught them on everysingle lure in my box... However when we target them (on lakes) we get out the heavy rods, wire leaders, "shark hooks" and float cutbait 2ft under a bobber in 6-9ft heavy weed beds. They put up a great fish if you have youngsters looking to get something nice.

if you want to hunt bowfin, either Maliboo or myself can point you to a spot that will be great for them in a few months. I know nothing about catching them early-season.

We catch them out of the west branch of the little cal during the summer, night crawlers, hot dogs, and cut shad all work pretty good on the bottom or under a bobber. I want to catch one on my fly rod this summer.

I catch quite a few in the back waters of the Kankakee east of Momence and in Indiana.
They are fun to catch but sure can chew up a spinnerbait.
