Out on the river at 8am this morning. Air temps in the mid 50's and water temp at launch time was 66 degree's. Only one other boat was launched when I got there. There was nobody at the Rt 173 bridge so I thought I might be the first to hit the area. I spent about 1/2 hour pitching minnows and slip boopers along the concrete, then switched to spinner baits but no fish/no bites. I then rigged up with some shadrap's and started trolling downstream. Not too many shore fisherman but lots of weeds and junk on the surface causing alot of lure fouling. Took my time to Grass Lake but left the river with nothing to show for my efforts. water level is about normal, maybe even a couple of inches high. Headed down towards Pistakee and saw that no one was fishing the Rt12 bridge so I spent about an hour jigging and casting minnows and a split shot but stll had no success. Some fish were being marked but all were small and suspended. Hit Fox Lake and trolled shad's from Mineola Bay to the Petite channel with no action. I started to think I should have stayed home and cut the grass. Went straight through Petite and Bluff thinking I would hit Marie but then decided to try one more bridge. I anchored under the Rt173 bridge between Marie and Channel lake and finally found some active fish. After working the bridge with crawlers and minnows with no luck, I noticed some surface action along the concrete so I set my slip bobbers at 1 1/2 foot down and started picking up some crappie and white bass. Below are the biggest of 4 white bass and 8 crappie that grabbed fatheads. 12 fish in about a half hour then all stopped.

Headed back to the river and trolled back to the launch with jointed raps but no success. I did stop at the downed tree's before the launch site and got 3 more crappie on slips with minnows but sizes were small. So the walleye are still sluggish. Water temps were back at the mid 70's when I pulled out. Not the worst day but if I didn't have that half hour of action, it would have been a bad day.

WHAT???? ...... No such thing as a bad day of fishing.

The lack of rain and late season heat is taking it's toll.

Ain't that the truth though. I swear I'm about sworn off of fishing anywhere within a hundred miles of here (inland anyway) until we get an 8-10 degree drop in water temps. This is getting silly. Tomorrow's weather you ask? "89 and humid" ... nice for July- not so nice during dove and smallie season.. Arghhh. Gotta escape north of the border.

back soon....

Thanks Todd, I was hoping it wasn't just me.

Since August, I've caught 1 walleye in Illinois. I was beginning to think I jinxed myself with this whole guiding thing.

..... Sleepless nights...... Should I change the color of the boat??? Should I only fish at night??? Should I take a shower????

:darn
