Hi All,
Myself and a few other members will be at the harbor patio (tournament HQ) putting goodie bags together, setting a few things up and waiting for a few deliveries. If you want to help, drop something off or just say hi we will be there 6pm - ?

Is that ON Friday? I need to drop off all the rods and reel combos and razor scooters on Friday.

Jim, no sweat! Goodie bag stuff is all I hope to have - want to have there. That's set. I'll have a small trailer there to store that stuff and anything else or someone that can't bring in the AM! I'd love to pour you a cold one Friday! No need for you and the great big pile of fun stuff for the kids you will be bringing to be there!

Correction!! I will not be storing people that can't bring stuff in the trailer. I have room to store anything people want to drop of or donate for the kids!

Rod it looks like SU had a great turn out today and a bunch of real happy kids. The prizes and gifts were insane, it looked like you had enough for every kid there plus some.........

SU thanks for giving Chitown some space on your banner and t-shirts. The shout out is appreciated!

Soon! I did not have time to take many. Need to collect a few from those who did. I'm feeling there will be an "SU IL kids derby photo contest" as soon as I can finalize a few details.

The early morning set-up begins...
Image

With fishing rods galore...
Image

And some fancy new bikes for the big fish winners.

First King comes into the HQ weigh-station at exactly 8 am.
Image

In the mean time it's getting busy out on Government Pier...

These gentlemen are patiently awaiting some action.

This guy was great for the kids, but a real nuisance to the guys at the GP weigh-station.
Sorry guys, next year I'll rig em up for anything but gobys.
Image

Mr, how much does it weigh?
Image

Mr, I have some more gobys for you to weigh in.
Image

Grey Lion tallying up the winners here and mumbling something about gobys.
Image

How about some grub while we wait for the counting to end.

Let the games begin...

Thanks for the ball!

It will take some time for me to put together the 2013 Kids Shore Fishing Derby gallery on the SU website. However, if you have a few photos that you would like to contribute to it you are welcome to send me a PM and I'll let you know how to get them to me for inclusion.

Notable catches

The "Big Fish" of the day a 13# King was caught by Gavin Olsen. He won first choice from the prize table. He chose the charter trip donated by Schooloffishcharter.com. Gavin will also receive a custom "Kids Derby Big Fish award" print by Jim Tingey.   https://www.catchandreleaseartwork.com/

The biggest surprise and second biggest fish was caught by Jordan Culta a  6.2 # carp. We had to add a new carp column to the spreadsheet  Jordan got his pick from the prize table and will get an SU IL membership and a seat on one of our member boats at the next springs new member outing.

And the winners are EVERYONE! Good memories and food for all, a derby shirt - a big goodie bag and a prize for every kid! Below are the species caught and the big fish winners. Two divisions 13 and under and 18 to 14 years old. These kids got the first picks from an incredible prize table.

SU IL puts alot of heart into making this a great event and trying to make it better every year. We couldn't do that without the help of a lot of people  and sponsors that are very generous with their time and money. Please take a minute and give them A call or email and say thanks. You would be surprised how rewarding - happy that is to them! Our thanks to them all!

Best regards,
Rod Miller
Derby Chairman

This was our 5th annual SU IL Kid's Fishing Derby and this year the weather was perfect. Thankfully, there were a lot of salmon in the harbor, so a few kids caught some quality fish. But this isn't just about fishing, this is a free party at the lake for families of all kinds, rich and poor and a chance for Salmon Unlimited members to share their love and respect for Lake Michigan with an enthusiastic group of young anglers. Our lake has its share of issues but with a caring core of citizens that have the lakes best interest in mind, most of the lakes hurdles can be jumped and resolved, but it will probably take decades, so we have to have our kids carry on our mission. Based on the kids attitudes I witnessed at this derby, I'm sure we'll be leaving it in good hands.

To everyone that showed up with kids to fish, thank you. There's nothing worse than throwing a party that nobody shows up to. We had 120 smiling contestants, that's pretty darn good.

To all the SU volunteers, you and our sponsors truly have a heart of gold, good on ya!

All the Best,

Jim Nelligan
