I'm looking to purchase a hand held marine radio for the boat, but there are four different models all the same basic price. Does anyone have some input as to quality? This radio is just a back up incase of trouble. These are the four I'm looking at: Uniden Atlantis 250, Oniden MHS 75, STANDARD HORIZON HX 2805, Humming Bird VHF 55SC. Charlie Yellowfin

I had the Uniden and really liked all the features it offered. The one big feature I liked is it lets you choose a number of certain channels to scan whereas most others only allow you to scan one channel you choose and 16/9. Keep in mind that these are not meant to be primary radios for lake Michigan. They are only useful for about 3 miles.

Hi Charlie -

I'll second the Uniden. I'm sure you know Capt. Randy Schmidt from SU and CSA. He's the commodore of Diversey Harbor and they outfit all the harbor crew with Unidens. They did a lot of testing and research. The Icoms were the best, but the Unidens were a very close second and less than 1/2 the price.

Tell John that Scott Wolfe says Hi. I'm about to leave for the annual Sturgeon Bay trip for a couple of weeks. Hopefully I'm not leaving the fish. Good luck.

my requisites would be waterproof and floats and include built in gps. plus any bells and whistles I felt like paying for.

I've been very pleased with the Std Horizon 850S I purchased a couple of years ago. Only use it as a backup, but every time I use it to try it out, it works fine in regard to gps signal and transmission. Thankfully, I haven't put it to the "in-water" test.
