I have no idea of what is being spoken of here. Two pound bluegills? There was a photo in In-Fisherman some twenty years ago of Shirlee Wilke who lives in Ogallala, Nebraska. She was holding up 2 2lb. bluegills that she had caught from a ranch pond out there. One evening, some five or six or more years later, I happened to think about that photo. I was at home by myself and I scanned through my old magazines to find that photo and have another gander at it. I couldn't stand it and grabbed the telephone and called Shirlee. She wasn't home but her husband and IO talked for quite a while about that ranch pond and the bluegills that they had caught from it. He said the ranch had sold and the new owners no longer allowed others to fish that pond. Then, a couple years ago, I ran into two ice anglers who knew the Wilkes pretty well and knew the ranch and the pond and told me of their own giant bluegills that they would get from time to time. That photo of Shirlee Wilke and her two 2 pounders has been pinned above my drawing table for more than a dozen years now. She still makes me sigh. I know the Bluegill Big Bluegill site and from his site, I have learned of four different public waters that produce those kinds of fish. One day I'll have at a couple of em. Now, about this latest In-Fisherman publication? Somebody hit my mail box before me? I'm getting the shakes here

Any as soon as your mailman is done with your I/F you'll get to see the article, right now and I hope its O.K. to do so,check out wwwbigbluegill.com .its a site run by Dr. Condello . Richmond Mill is an 180 acre private pond which they tried to make a trophy bass fishery out of,GIANT gills also resulted. Jim Gronaw authors the article and is noted for catching big red ears in his home state of Maryland on of all things spoons.Oh yeah sweet dreams!

Big Bluegills.com sure is a good site Johnny Finn. I check it out every now and then. You could spend the whole day just looking at the pictures.

There was a farm pond in central IL we used to fish that had some very nice 'gills in it. Pretty sure they were pure, but don't think they were 14". That was some good fun, just watch out for the cows, and their..um...by-poroduct. Doc's pond Thanks for the memories... Shawn ps My great uncle to a monster channel cat there in a canoe one time, would have loved to have seen that!

This one isn't in Illinois - and I don't know if it's still the case as I haven't fished there in decades - but Nelson Lake near Hayward used to have some incredible bluegills. The Nelson Lake brochure for several years had a picture of my uncle holding something like a 2+ lb-er.
Anyone been there in recent years?
