Warning:This post is picture heavy
Went out to the canal yesterday and wasn't expecting too much because of this cold front that's moving trough this area. The cold front actually had no effect on the fishing. My friend got the first fish of the day. While we were unhooking him, I get a run on my rod. We had to throw his fish back without getting a picture so he could net my fish. (His fish was about seven pounds) We get mine in and it weighed in at 13 pounds. We keep fishing for awhile and my friend gets the next bite. He sets the hook but the fish pops off almost immediately. He reels in and puts new bait on and casts out again. In less than a minute he gets another run. This time we were able to get this fish in. It's a nice seven or eight pounder (I don't remember exactly how much it weighed). Not soon after I get a bite. I could tell it was a monster right away. While fighting him he almost wrapped me around a bridge pylon. Lucking I got him away from that area. I got him and weighed him. It was another 18lb carp. Now, the biggest fish I've ever caught was 19lbs, I can't seem to break the 19lb mark. Anyway my friend and I each get another carp, both about 8lbs. He got a new camera so all our pictures are better quality. He was playing around with it and we got some nice pictures of the canal.

I've never tried them as catfish bait. I don't think I could bring myself to kill such a large fish that I enjoyed catching. Although I've also just kind of given up on catfish fishing because no matter where I go or what bait I use I can only catch bullheads.

If you are ever fishing a large body of water with bigger catfish present, 50+ lbers, carp in the 5lb range are excellent bait. I will slice a fillet off an entire side as well as use the head for bait. I use 8/0-10/0 hook, and leave the hook totally exposed. This bait works well when you wanna get away from the smaller catfish as only a big one tends to mess with them. Carp works really good on flatheads too. If you ever have a chance to fish braidwood or the mississippi, this will work there.

I've used sonny's super sticky bait on the Kankakee river with good results. Chicken livers work good too. I do catch a carp here and there on night crawlers in the Kankakee and I also put them back I have never used one for bait.
