Im planning a trip on Saturday. Cant decide where to go. The weather looks good and I have my choice of locations narrowed to Portage, Michigan City or Waukegan. I know reports are picking up in Waukegan. But, I also have heard of positive things happening in both Michigan City and just North East of Portage. What say you?

Not sure if the conditions changed much since last week but three 30# kings and 41# king were taken on the east side last weekend. Tournament in St Joe had something crazy like 17 boats with limits of twenty pounds or better. If i didn’t just sell my boat I’d be chasing those fish 100%

Gonna be a BIG fish year this year.

From what I've heard, Michigan City would be the place to go out of the 3 you mentioned. Sounds like the hot action in MC is right out of the harbor.

I'm planning on fishing Saturday as well out of Montrose. Still not sure of a game plan but considering running up toward Waukegan. If I could trailer, I'd be in MC or St. Joe's.

Good luck!

Make sure you tell the captain where to fish and what to use. They always love that.

Michigan City has been hit or miss. I fished yesterday and today 7am to moon and manger 6 coho between the two days. Last week same days did 10 kings one day and 4 the other. Heard the kings were on at dusk last night. If I were you I’d spend $10 a guy for a one day MI license and spend another 45 min in the truck and get to St Joe. It’s been on fire for big kings the last 2 weeks up there.

I haven't fished yet, but I was on the water Monday, and there was a ton of debris out of Waukegan. There is a small craft advisory until 10PM Friday night with strong NE winds. That debris is going to be stacked up on the inside again, where the fish should be in 25 to 35 FOW. Not trying to steer you one way or the other, just one more thing for you to consider. St. Joe water you would think would be clear with those winds.

Indecision may or may not be my problem. :bang

Good Luck and let us know the results.

Tom

I just hope to be awake in time to make the charter. From there I'll be happy to be along for the ride. It's for my son's 10th birthday. Hoping we don't have to cancel but Sunday doesn't look great.

There is a creek/river that runs into the Lake, just south of the south rocks. Don't know the name of it, but you can see it from the south point parking area. It is usually just a gentle creek or drain off. After the flooding rains they had up there Sunday night and Monday morning, it was full rapids. The current was strong enough to reach the harbor mouth of Waukegan when I pulled in at 4 in the afternoon.

There’s still some debris in close by Waukegan, but not nearly as bad as earlier in the week. Pretty foggy out here today, still keep a look out though.

It's called the Waukegan river. There is a youtube video of a guy canoeing down river and into lake - Waukegan harbor thats kind of interesting. I would have posted the youtube link but have never done that before and didn't have time to figure it out.
