During August, six of us Chitown buddies decided to book a Charter with Dan Keating on the "Blue Horizon," the man who literally "wrote the book" about Great Lakes Trout and Salmon fishing. We each have our own boats and thought it would be fun and educational to fish together in a different area and watch someone else worry about finding fish and which baits and tactics to use. We had Rob and his dad "Goomba Bob" from Gina Bella, Brian from "Bird Dog", Dave from "Zamboati", the other Dave from "Big Ken" and yours truly, Monty from McIntosh. Between August and October, we learned that Capt Dan intended to retire at the season's end, all the more reason to make this happen.

The weather leading up to Sunday was bad with south and west gales on Friday and Saturday. We figured the trip may have to cancel. However, the heavy west winds Saturday night flattened the water east of NP, so we had perfect conditions. At 6 am, we launched in the darkness to a very comfortable sea state. The heavy west gales created an upwelling that caused 45*F water at the NP harbor mouth. The surface was 49*F 2 miles out. I enjoyed Dan cruise at 6 knots watching the sonar to hunt for fish and bait before deciding whether to fish. Once he decided we were in promising waters, the 2 corner riggers went down first, followed by 2 dipsies, His DRs were "Magnum Metalz" with 25 lb pancake weights! He was serious about getting to the bottom.

Anyway, within 10 mins we had a fish on and Goomba Bob had seniority. We think it was a king because it ripped line pretty well. But he lost it. Five minutes after resetting it, it fires again and we gave him a 2nd chance. This time he landed a beautiful 15 lb king which (I hope) Rob will post a pic of it. I was up next and landed a small "eater king" that hit a blue and silver spoon on the 200 copper. After that, we had a series of lake trout hits and misses going 13-19? I think. I believe our big laker was about 15 lbs also, mostly firing on those incredible corner DRs. No dipsy bites and only 3 bites on copper and leadcore.

Dan was a pleasure to fish with and he's just as friendly in person as he is at a seminar or in his books. The Blue Horizon was a great experience for us and we each learned a lot from Dan also.

Thanks for taking us along with you on the Blue Horizon Monty. :D

Spotting feeding fish and hooking up within 10' with the tough weather and fishing the last several weeks demonstrates why Capt Keating is the best. Just adds another episode to his illlustrious career. :respect

Best wishes in your future endeavors Capt Dan!

Really was a great time and a fun way to end the season. We'll have to it again, no doubt. Thanks for putting it all together, Monty, and Rob for driving.

It was probably one of the most relaxing fishing trips I've ever been on. 6 crew that know their way around a boat and a hard working captain made it pretty easy. At least to me, it seemed everyone really enjoyed fishing on someone else's boat for a change!
